My name is Jennifer Young and I am the director and owner of Blue Ridge Performing Arts Academy. I would like to tell you a little about my career as a performing
artist and teacher. I have spent all my life singing, dancing, acting, playing the
piano as well as other instruments, and writing music. It brings me great pleasure to have the opportunity to take the talents God and my parents gave me and share
them with others. I have truly been blessed to experience all of the
performing arts and have performed in many different venues. These were
some of the best memories of my life.
My teaching career
began in high school when I began teaching for my instructor, Ray Hollingsworth, at Hollingsworth Studio of Dance in Rocky Mount, Va.
I studied under his company for 10 years and with Floyd Ward Studio of Dance for 2 years.
While under their direction I obtained many national titles at various competitions and was awarded with best choreographer awards. Dance has been a wonderful outlet for me to express myself not only visually but emotionally and having the opportunity to teach gives me great joy and satisfaction. Teaching is my life and my passion.
After graduating high school, I began teaching dance at Ferrum
College and expanded into other counties by offering classes at local fire departments in that area. While attending Ferrum College I majored in liberal arts and minored in music and theater arts. I privately studied voice for 6 years under the direction of Gina and Gary Evans
and piano for 9 years under the direction of Herbert Wray, Mary Alice Bowman and Dr. Erma Rose. I also trained on 8 different instruments with Carlton Wilkes and Wayne Nelson including saxophone, flute, clarinet, timpani, oboe, alto clarinet, bassoon, and xylophone. My goal was to become a teacher and my professors gave me wonderful opportunities to be a leader and teacher while attending college. I played lead sax for several years for the Ferrum Jazz band and was assistant director for the pep band for the Ferrum Panthers directing and playing at their football and basketball games. I also auditioned for "The Ferrum Singers" which was a traveling and competing choral group and was asked to be their choreographer. While receiving my education at Ferrum I also played with the Jack Tales and was an actor in several plays while I attended college studying under the direction of Rex Stephenson.
My life has been full of wonderful experiences in the performing arts field. I have had the opportunity to play the lead in many plays both locally and abroad and have directed and produced plays locally through my company as well as being the director of theater for Franklin County High School for the past 2 years. I was also the choir director for the adult and childrens choir at
Piedmont Presbyterian Church for 10 years. In addition to the other opportunities I have had throughout my career I was also a member of the “The New Virginians” under the direction of Stan Kingma as well as lead
teacher and dance program coordinator for the YMCA.
Blue Ridge Performing Arts Academy is now
beginning it’s 8th year and I am so honored that the community has
supported the academy. I hope that those who choose to join our academy
will have a rewarding experience that will last a lifetime.
I hope to
see you at the academy!
